In this episode I’m breaking down how to build your personal brand online.
It seems like everybody is trying to do this right now, and it seems like everyone is trying to stick out from the crowd. If you’re feeling overwhelmed and feeling like you just can’t get your voice out there, or you don’t know what direction to go to build that personal brand and that platform online, this is an episode for you.
I’m your host, Kady Thompson. I started at ground zero, like anyone else, and I have been asked to speak on numerous stages, and train groups of thousands of people. I’ve built multiple six figures online in a short amount of time, and currently manage a FB customer group with over 30k people in it (along with a team with over 600 people!). So, I have been around the block y’all. Today, I’m using that experience to break down five of the most simple tips that are going to help you build your brand and be seen online.
Number 1: Choose ONE Platform
Which platform are you going to use? And a lot of times people go online, they say: “okay, I want to build my personal brand, and I want to be seen on YouTube and Pinterest and Instagram and Facebook”….and you’re all over the place, and that’s the problem guys!!! When you’re starting to build a brand, you’ve got to choose one. I’ll say it again louder for the people in the back: You’ve GOT to choose one, and you’ve got to run with it!
And typically, how you choose that one is where you spend most of your time. Do you spend most of your time posting in Instagram? Or do you spend most of your time on Facebook? Are you someone who absorbs a ton of information off of YouTube? Are you spending tons of hours on YouTube? That could be your platform. But, you’ve got to just choose one to begin with, and you’ve got to build your audience from there. Once you get that solid foundation in one network, then you can go and take it into other networks!
Promise me, you will start with one. I can’t tell you how many people get themselves in over their head by trying to be everywhere all the time, and it just doesn’t work that way. You’ve got to really niche down, get good at one social media platform, and grow your audience from there.
Number 2: Educate and Provide Value
In this step, you want to make sure that the content that you’re putting out onto the web and onto social media is providing sort of value to your audience. You are educating them, giving them tips and tricks, helping them get more from you than you’re getting from them. The more that you give, the more you’re going to get, and that’s really the kind of methodology behind social media and how to build a true brand.
For example, think about all those people who you follow. When you go over to their platforms, you’re actually getting way more from them than they’re getting from you. To the point where you get so much from them, then you’re willing to make an investment with them. That’s what you want to do: create an atmosphere and culture where you are give, give, give, give, give (educate, give tips and tricks), then sell. The easiest way to do this is to give value in the area that you are an expert in. And if you’re not an expert, Google it!
Don’t be a generalist in this either. When you are looking into educating people, you want to really niche down and you want to get really concise on your topic. What is it that you’re trying to sell? What kind of products? What kind of service? And then you want to give tips and tricks around that specific product or service.
Number 3: Build Your Network Through Your Network
This, you guys, is probably the one tip that I can give you that exploded my business. I went to six figures in five months, and I did it all by using the network of my audience. I know that sounds kind of foreign to you, but I want you to keep this in mind…If you’re just starting on social media, you probably have a really small following. You probably have maybe a couple hundred friends here, a couple of hundred followers here, if that, so you can’t rely on that specific network to grow your business and grow your personal brand. You have to start relying on other people’s networks!
That doesn’t mean you’re going to go to someone who has a million followers and say, “Hey, can you feature me on your next podcast?” Or, “Can you feature me on your next YouTube video?” No, you’re going to go to people who are in your audience already, and you’re going to find people who have a similar audience as you and maybe do a dual live broadcast together, or maybe get featured in their group, or ask them to post for you. One other way to leverage built in audiences is in groups. Join different groups that you can provide value and input in, and you’re going to be offering your services into those groups and growing your audience through your networks audience. Brilliant, right!?
Number 4: Hustle Harder
Nobody said that this was going to be easy and, in fact, you’re going to see a lot of people come into this space who are like: “I’m going to start making some money right now”. And they come in with a big ego and they are literally flying out of the industry as quickly as they came into it because they’re not willing to hustle. And the fact of the matter is, there are always going to be people who are willing to hustle harder than you are!
I will say, be smart and be strategic with your time. Your most valuable asset is your time and you want to make sure you’re using your time wisely and you’re using that time to grow your business, grow your brand, grow your audience, and you’re willing to put in that time and effort.
If you’re online, and if you’re watching this video, then I’m willing to bet that you actually run an online business. And, the fact of the matter is that, it’s YOUR business. Nobody’s going to tell you when to jump. Nobody’s going to tell you when you need to pivot right. No one’s going to tell you that you need to invest more time or invest in this training or go this way or continue pushing through the sucky days. You’re going to have to pick yourself back up multiple times and you’re going to have to be the one to say: “I’m not giving up. I’m willing to hustle. I’m willing to put in the effort”. And you run after it.
Number 5: Claim It
So many people go into the online space and they tiptoe around what it is that they’re doing. They’re scared of what their friends are going to think. They’re scared of what their neighbors are going to say. But it doesn’t matter, guys. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what other people are going to say, think, or do in regards to your business. You have to claim your space online. You have to show unwavering confidence in what it is that you have to offer and what it is that you’re doing online.
You need to go into your social media platforms and you need to put what you do into your bio’s. You need to announce it out to the world. Go live on your social media platforms. Share what it is that you’re doing, share your journey and be open and proud and loud about it. Because, if you have any kind of insecurities around it, that is going to show all over all of your content that you put out onto social media, and onto your blogs and into your Facebook and everywhere that you’re putting content out. If you aren’t a hundred percent confident, it’s going to be showcased in that content, guys, and that is going to hurt your brand more than anything else. Mindset is 80% of the game so if you are struggling in this area dive into trainings and personal development on a daily basis.
As a recap, you can absolutely start from ground zero and grow a personal brand online today.
It takes being strategic. It takes doing five simple things, including, choosing one specific platform, educating and sharing value to your audience, utilizing their networks to grow your own, making sure that you are hustling harder than anybody else, and claiming it!
